What Is MG in Black Russia

MG (MetaGaming) is using OOC information your character could not possibly have learned in-game—information from real life, Discord, or another chat. Under rule 2.18 of the general rules, you get a 30-minute mute for it.

A classic example: a player sees your character for the first time and greets them by name—they read the nickname above their head. Or someone is “coincidentally” waiting for you on the highway because a friend on Discord told them where you were going. In both cases, the character knows something they couldn’t possibly know. That’s MG—and it’s one of the easiest rules to break without even realizing it.

PG / ПГPowerGaming (powergaming)

Giving your character abilities that aren't realistic; showing no fear for your life (“hero roleplay”).

Example: An unarmed player takes on an armed gangster or a group of police officers alone, or jumps off a roof.

MG / МГMetaGaming (metagaming)

Using OOC information that your character couldn't have obtained through IC means (information from real life, Discord, or another chat) in in-game chat.

Example: You saw a player's name above their head or learned their name on Discord and addressed them by name, even though the characters hadn't met. Exception: a one-off «?», «!», «))» or words like «skin», «donate» and «virts» in IC chat are not punished.

Punishment: Mute for 30 minutes · rule 2.18

IC / ИСIn Character

In-character information and actions related to gameplay and what's happening in the game.

OOC / ООСOut Of Character

Information that's out of character and unrelated to gameplay (real life, Discord, etc.). In-game OOC chat messages use double parentheses (( )); there's a separate /n chat for OOC (NonRP chat), and radio channels use /rn and /fn.

Test yourself: is it MG?

  • MG: you call a stranger by name after seeing the nickname above their head. Fine: you ask, “What’s your name?” or ask them to show their passport—they can use the /pass command.
  • MG: you type “let’s go to Discord, I’ll tell you where the base is” in regular chat. Fine: say the same thing in /n or inside double parentheses (( )).
  • MG: you see on a stream where your rival’s car is parked and drive there. Fine: your character spots the car themselves, or someone tells them by in-game phone.
  • MG: your character “knows” a new faction member is your real-life friend and immediately calls them by name. Fine: meet them according to the charter, through a report and documents.
  • Not MG: a single “))” after a joke or the word “donate” in IC chat—the rules explicitly make an exception for this.

There’s one test question: how does your character know this? If the answer is “from the game,” there’s no violation. If it’s “I saw it,” “someone messaged me on Discord,” or “I saw it on a stream,” that’s an OOC source, and you can’t use it in-game. For more on the difference between OOC and IC, see the page about OOC and IC.

Remember the rule’s exceptions

Rule 2.18 includes a caveat: there’s no punishment for using “?”, “!”, or “))” once, or for using individual words like “skin”, “donate”, “virts”, and similar terms in IC chat. The key word is once. These related chat rules can also get you muted:

  • A string like “))))”, “???????”, or “Yesssss” is abuse of punctuation and symbols. Rule 3.06: 30-minute mute.
  • Sending the same message three times in a row is flooding. Rule 3.05: 30-minute mute.
  • Typing in all caps, even a single “SELLING”, breaks rule 3.02: 30-minute mute.

Tell MG apart from PG and RK

Players often mix up these three terms during interviews because they’re all about a “character acting unlike a real person.”

Term What’s wrong Example
MG The character knows too much Called someone by the nickname above their head
PG The character can do too much and fears nothing Went alone and unarmed against three people with assault rifles
RK The character takes revenge for their own death Returned to the place where they died within 15 minutes

MG and RK share a boundary. In the forum test, the third RK example is using information that led to your death after you respawn—for example, remembering where the ambush was and returning better prepared. There’s no separate punishment for RK in the general rules, but if the HR department asks, “Are you allowed to return to the place where you died?”, the correct answer is, “No. That violates the game rules.” For PG, see the separate page about what PG is.

Avoid getting caught for MG

  • Meet in RP. Introduce yourself, show your documents using /pass—after that, your character knows their name IC, so you can use it.
  • Keep non-game talk in /n or (( )). Anything said in regular chat is spoken by your character.
  • Bring information into the game. If your character learns something, have them learn it in RP: a phone call, a radio message, or a /do roleplay action. Then it’s legitimate IC information.
  • Don’t repeat your family’s Discord chat in-game. Even if it’s all true, your character didn’t hear it.
  • Don’t hunt people down using a stream. Finding a streamer through their own stream is MG. Deliberately killing them to disrupt the stream also counts as interfering with a blogger’s work under official partnership: rule 2.12, 7-day ban.

Know what a mistake can cost

A 30-minute mute is the lightest RP punishment: you can’t type in text chat for half an hour. It’s annoying in the middle of an RP situation when your character needs to respond, but it doesn’t affect your faction or account. The cumulative count is different: six or more violations in 7 days can get you a 7–15-day ban under rule 2.39. Punishments for text chat violations and kicks don’t count toward this total. MG is listed in the gameplay rules section, so in my reading, it does count.

During an interview, it’s best to define MG using the wording from the forum test: “using OOC information your character could not possibly have learned through IC gameplay.” If you got a mute unfairly, you can appeal it on the forum—see the process on the page about warns, demorgan, and bans.

Questions and answers

What is MG in Black Russia?
MetaGaming: using OOC information your character could not possibly have learned through IC gameplay. Simply put, it’s when you use what you know as a player, not as your character.
What punishment do you get for MG?
A 30-minute mute—a text chat block (rule 2.18). Voice chat is blocked by a separate punishment: Voice mute.
Can you type "))" in regular chat?
Once, yes. Rule 2.18 doesn’t punish one-off uses of "?", "!", "))", or individual words like "skin", "donate", and "virts" in IC chat. A string like "))))" is abusing punctuation and also gets you a 30-minute mute.
Is calling a player by the nickname above their head MG?
Yes, if your characters haven’t met: you can see the nickname above their head, but your character can’t. Meet in RP first—ask their name or ask them to show their passport.
What’s the difference between MG and PG?
MG is when your character knows something they couldn’t have learned. PG is when your character does something they can’t physically do and doesn’t fear for their life.
